Is the Disney Destiny Too "Spooky" for Kids? An Honest, Unsponsored Review

By Laura, from Five Hungry Travelers

The Disney Destiny has officially set sail, and with its unique "Heroes and Villains" theme, it’s unlike any other ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. But if you’re traveling with younger kids who prefer Princesses over Poison Apples, you might be wondering: Is this the right ship for my family?

We just returned from a four-night sailing on the Destiny with our three kids (ages 11, 7, and 5). As paid guests on one of the very first public sailings, we’re sharing the real experience—from the improvisational character moments to the "must-do" shows that might actually be worth skipping.

Watch our full Disney Destiny tour and review below! (or follow the link here! What Makes the Disney Destiny Different?)

1. Entertainment That Goes Beyond the Stage

The biggest differentiator on the Disney Destiny is how the storytelling moves off the stage and into the ship itself.

  • Zayah and Gamble: These two "legend keepers" are the heartbeat of the ship. They lead interactive stories in the Grand Hall, including the "Legend of Loki". Now remember, my kids aren’t into Villians or Marvel and… Loki stalking around the different levels overlooking the Grand Hall made my little ones nervous!

  • Improvisational Magic: Unlike the rigid meet-and-greets on other ships, the Destiny leans into playful, interactive moments like Cruella De Vil’s Wretched Runway and the Trebblemaking with Cruella piano lounge show. We’ve haven’t seen this level of immersive interaction since the Galactic Starcruiser and I truly believe it’s what Disney desperately needs more of!

  • Marvel Fans Rejoice: Between the Sounds of Wakanda percussion show and the 18+ "With Great Power" comedy show, Marvel fans will find a level of immersion that is rare on other ships. That show was more “mature” than most anything we’ve seen by Disney! I mean… Deadpool makes a virtual appearance with his Wolverine sock puppet? Woah!

2. Dr. Facilier’s Parlor: Is it Worth the Wait?

One of the most talked-about new experiences is the Dr. Facilier’s Parlor interaction.

The Reality: It is a 10-minute "magic show" style interaction in a group of 10-12 people. While the experience is cool, we waited nearly an hour in line for it. If your kids aren't "villain fans," this might be one to skip in favor of more time at the pool or the Oceaneer Club. (you can check out the full video of our Oceaneer Club tour here!

3. Unique Spaces: Rapunzel, Doctor Strange, and Haunted Mansion Parlor

  • Untangled Salon: A Rapunzel-themed salon that is perfect for a multi-generational "Mommy and Me" manicure. Unlike the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, this is a great way to do an activity with your child. We had to do it on the first night, but that’s okay- we had fancy nails to match all our cruise outfits!

  • The Haunted Mansion Parlor: This bar is a "grim grinning" good time! We loved the themed sodas and watching Madame Leota appear in the mirror. I could stay here all day looking for Easter Eggs from the classic ride!

  • The Sanctum: Based on Doctor Strange, this bar features "magical" drinks, though we found the non-alcoholic options a bit lacking compared to other spots. I’ll be honest, it’s my least favorite treatment of this space among the 3 current Tritan-class ships.

4. Bonus Pro-Tips for Your Destiny Sailing!

  • The Best Character Moment: Don't stress about the long character lines during the day or missing the signup for the Royal Gathering. The "Destiny Discovered" farewell show on the final night is a 15-minute character "photo frenzy" in the Grand Hall that includes everyone from Tiana and Moana to Mickey and friends.

But there’s lots to do on board that’s has nothing to do with the entertainment offered. Because the ship itself is entertainment! To check out all those details, see this video with a tour of the pool deck and all its offerings. Thanks for joining us, Travelers!
