How to Spend One Perfect Night in Athens Before Your Cruise

Flying into Athens the day before your cruise is one of the best decisions you can make. It gives you a cushion against travel delays and the chance to soak up one of the most historic cities in the world. On our recent Virgin Voyages sailing, we had just over 24 hours in Athens—and it turned out to be one of the most memorable pre-cruise stays we’ve ever had.

Here’s how we made the most of one night in Athens: where to stay, what to eat, and the must-see experiences you don’t want to miss.

Where to Stay: Academias Hotel, Autograph Collection

For our Athens stay, we booked the **Academias Hotel**, a Marriott Autograph Collection property, using **Marriott Bonvoy points**. This boutique-style hotel combines sleek, modern design with touches that celebrate Athens’ history and philosophy.

The real highlight, though? Booking an **Acropolis View Room**. From our bed, our chair, and even the shower, we had a picture-perfect view of the Acropolis—an unforgettable way to begin a vacation in Greece.

Hotel Highlights

*Acropolis View Rooms (limited availability—book 9–12 months in advance!)

*Boutique décor with dark tones, gold accents, and smart lighting

*Rooftop Nyx Japanese gastro pub with panoramic Acropolis views

*Symposium Restaurant for breakfast and casual dining

*Plato Lobby Bar for drinks

* Indoor pool, small sauna, and spa services at prices lower than most cruise ships

The hotel leans into its “Academia” theme, with quotes from Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle decorating the walls. It’s a property that feels rooted in Athens while still delivering the comfort and perks of a Marriott. For more details and a full room tour, check out our YouTube video here!

What to Do with 24 Hours in Athens

Morning: Markets & Museums

After dropping our bags and grabbing an espresso, we started our day with a **farmers market breakfast** near the **National Archaeological Museum**. For just €1, we snacked on apricots and cherry tomatoes before heading inside.

The museum (€12 entry) is an excellent way to escape the summer heat while exploring artifacts spanning thousands of years of Greek history. It gave us a strong sense of context before seeing Athens’ landmarks outdoors.

Afternoon: Foodie Finds in Athens

Athens is surprisingly easy for gluten-free and dairy-free travelers. We highly recommend:

*Asterisque Gluten-Free Bakery – for sesame-covered Greek bagels, spinach pies, and potato pastries.

*Veganaki – a fully vegan restaurant where we tried fava bean dip, zucchini pie, Greek salad, and a hearty vegan moussaka.

Prices were reasonable, and the food felt authentic rather than overly catered to tourists.

Evening: Strolling the National Gardens & An Unforgettable Concert at an Ancient Site

In the late afternoon, we wandered through the **National Gardens**, stopping at the **Temple of Olympian Zeus** and **Hadrian’s Arch**. Even without paying for full archaeological site entry, you’ll spot plenty of ruins scattered through the gardens. We loved using the GPS My City walking tour, as we do in almost every city we visit!

If you want something unforgettable, check Athens’ **Epidaurus Festival schedule**. We were lucky enough to attend a **free World Music Day concert** at the **Odeon of Herodes Atticus**, a 2,000-year-old amphitheater at the base of the Acropolis. Sitting where ancient Athenians once gathered to be entertained was a highlight of our trip.

*Tip:* If you book tickets here, choose seats on **House Right** (stage left). They offer the best view of the Acropolis glowing at night.

Departure Day: Brunch and Off to the Port

Because Virgin Voyages departs later in the day, we had time for brunch at **Nudie Foodie**, where the matcha pancakes and omelets were perfect fuel before heading to **Piraeus Port**.

Getting to the port was easy: a 25-minute taxi ride booked through the **Free Now app**, which ensures fair rates and a stress-free transfer.

Final Tips for Your Athens Pre-Cruise Stay

*Book early: If you want an Acropolis View Room at the Academia Hotel, plan 9–12 months ahead.

*Arrive hungry: Athens has great options for gluten-free, vegan, and dairy-free travelers.

*Beat the heat: Schedule indoor sites (like the National Archaeological Museum) for midday.

*Check local events: A concert at the Odeon or another festival event could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

*Don’t risk it: Always fly in the day before your cruise—you’ll thank yourself later.

The Perfect Start to Your Cruise

Our one night in Athens set the tone for an incredible vacation. Between the Acropolis views from our hotel, delicious Greek food, and the thrill of sitting in an ancient amphitheater, this short stay reminded us why Athens is more than just a port city—it’s a destination in its own right.

If you’re cruising from Athens, don’t just pass through. Spend the night, soak it in, and start your trip with a memory you’ll never forget.
